ROLE OF THE Academic programs & policies committee
A primary purpose of the Senate as the representative body for faculty in institutional governance and academic matters, is to monitor the content and quality of Institute programs, curricula, and courses. As specified in the bylaws, it has “responsibilities including, but not limited to, the following:
"i.   Approving academic policies and procedures;
ii.   Reviewing structures of programs, curricula, and schools; and
iii.   Providing for appropriate review of course additions and changes.”
That purpose is implemented through the Academic Programs and Policies Committee (APPC).

The APPC was established in 1991 as a standing committee of the Academic Senate, to which the Senate has delegated preliminary review of academic matters. The committee examines the quality, content, and educational goals of academic policies and procedures; program initiatives; curriculum study and development; proposals for all additions, changes and discontinuance of courses and programs; and such other matters as may be referred to it by the Senate. The committee consults with appropriate student, staff, and administrative representatives, and forwards its actions to the Senate for consideration.

The committee is composed of a minimum of five members and seeks to maintain representation and curricular expertise from across the institute, with faculty or chair membership from all four schools and the library, generally in the same proportion as their senate membership. Two student representatives are also included as non-voting members.
